10 LOCKDOWN LEARNINGS | I Was Getting Married Today!
I was supposed to be getting married today. Around about now, we 'should' be in Mexico, at a resort on the beach in the Riviera Maya, with many of our friends and family... You can probably guess that none of this plan is currently happening!
This year has gone anything but to our plan - and by 'our' I mean almost all of us. If anyone would have predicted the events of 2020, last December, they would have probably been laughed at and called a scare-mongering conspiracy theorist!
I've often said that we aren't in total control of what happens, and that we need to learn how to find peace and empowerment amidst the inevitable reality of life not always happening as we might expect. Well, this year, we've all had plenty practise at letting go of our plans, right?
10 LOCKDOWN LEARNINGS
Here's my Top Ten personal observations and learnings from 2020:
We can make life an adventure (by welcoming the unexpected)
We are incredibly resilient (able to adapt to whatever life brings)
We can find inner peace (when problems appear in the outside world)
We can find freedom within (when faced with external restrictions)
We don't need our loved-ones to think the same as us (to still love them)
We will go to great lengths to protect others (even if it messes with our plans)
We can live without fear (by living fully in the present moment)
We are more able than ever to see with 2020 vision (revealing more truth)
We can stand up for what we know is right (and have the strength to do so)
We can always take less for granted (and be much more grateful)
Last night, Maharani and I went to a restaurant that we'd previously rated as 'below average'. This time was different. Everything was so much more special. Nothing had changed about the food, service or setting, but we had changed.
We were so appreciative of the simple act of a meal out. I think this year has made us all so much more grateful for the simple pleasures of spending time with friends, walking in the park, savouring a sunset...
I hope as things move forward, and inevitably change again (and again), that we can all remember the power of praising what we would have previously criticised. And that we can look to find what's present, instead of what's lacking; look for the good in others and life, instead of dwelling on what we believe is bad.
So on the date I was supposed to be getting married, I'm also grateful for not marrying Maharani today! Take this the right way... The entire experience - from being quarantined in Mexico together for several months, to returning to Spain and making a house a home, has made us stronger, kinder, and more connected.
Perhaps it wouldn't have happened, so soon, if our year had gone to our plan.
What has 2020 shown you? Let me know the upsides of your upside-down year!
